‘Cyrano’ Review

Cyrano de Bergerac is a classic love story, unrequited and tragic. The main Character Cyrano is in some way not the norm visual, often this has been portrayed with a massive nose. In the 2022 film  Cyrano has Dwarfism which in the time setting of this film means he would be considered unappealing. This musical is extremely heartfelt and emotional throughout with beautiful framing, set and costume design. I did find the music a little off as it never reaches a flowing states. What I mean to say is that the way the pitches and tone of the music rises and falls caught me off guard in essentially every song. I find it interesting that Cyrano has not aimed for a more easily digestible musical style so that it can compete with films such as The greatest showman’, I don’t hear many people talking about this one at all.

Cyrano is portrayed by Peter Dinklage is a classical romantic protagonist, so in love but unable to express it due to fear of rejection.Amusing Dinklage is by all means a very handsome man. This is always an easy set up for people to emotional connect with and does work effectively here also.

My main take away from this film is Joe Wrights capacity make emotion extremely harrowing. The struggle to express oneself is something that everyone feels from time to time and it is compelling to watch unfold in this film. Beyond the aspect of love and romance,A small musical number had me stunned and on the edge of my seat toward the end of the film.

Cyrano de Bergerac is very old story which has been redone and refurbished many times over, as such it is very well known and refined. I had a very easy time connecting with the main characters of this film and it is a shame that I have not heard much in the way of publicity or marketing for it.
