‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ Review

I have never been a major Sonic the hedgehog fan, I have what I would call small experience with the games but my wife absolutely loves it. Between the two us we might have some differing opinions right? So, was this film any good? Both me and my wife enjoyed the hell out of it.

Sonic, Knuckles and Tails all stand out on the big screen with their varying levels of fish out of water personality. Sonic is somewhat settling in, but being irresponsible with his powers, tails is shy and inexperienced and knuckles is straight up not in tune with earth at all. This dynamic creates a nice contrast and provides small arcs for each so that we get see clear character development by the time credits roll.

Effects wise, the graphical fidelity of all of these characters is amazing, each of the stars is given very fine details to make them cartoony yet applicable to their surroundings. This is goes a long way when we even see sonic in a torn apart battlefield and it looks crazy good.

The film is a lighthearted outing with a rollercoaster up and down feel and has some structural issues perhaps. Whilst Eggman, sonic, knuckles and tails all shine, James Marsden’s character and the rest of the humans all take a backseat with nothing to do. The humans absolutely feel like a waste of screen time, though they add a sliver of heart to sonic’s story.

Simulating the feeling of a video game has previously not gone down well on the big screen, but it seems that sonic has cracked the formula for a satisfied go of it.

Fans and children will get a lot from this, others will enjoy it none the less, providing they have seen the previous entry to the franchise.
